Andrei Makine, a Russian who now lives in France and has published several
books in French, is best known in the US for his
semi(?)-autobiographical(?) novel (?,) DREAMS OF MY RUSSIAN SUMMERS,
translated into English in 1997. In reviews (and on the jacket blurb, )it
was widely compared to VN's SPEAK MEMORY. Makine's book is well worth
reading but the comparision to VN is far-fetched. Both are bilingual
writers and Makine's book is rather explicitly about bi-cultural identity
-- with a surprising ending.
