Estonia, then an unwilling part of the USSR, has the distinction of
producing one of the first pieces of Nabokov scholarship during the
Nabokov ban when Mikhail Lotman, son of the famed Tartu semiotician Yury
Lotman, published an article on the poery of one Fyodor
Godunov-Cherdyntsev.

A very fine article "Kakskeelne talent" ( "Bilingual Gift" ) appeared in
one of the last issues of "Kultuurielu" newspaper. Given in a form of an
interview with one of the best Estonian writers Rein Saluri, it covers
virtually all the most important points of VN`s life and career. Rein
Saluri, who is working on Estonian translation of "Priglasheniie na kazn'"
and "Podvig", also wrote a paper "Nabokov ja eestlased" ( "Nabokov and
Estonians" ) , published in the March issue of a literary magazine
"Looming" . Up till now only three VN's novels is possible to read in
Estonian: "Zashchita Luzhina", "Lolita" and "Transparent Things". Rein
Saluri translations, as well as Valentin Kuik's screen version of a short
story "Podlets" and a conference dedicated to VN, organized by Russian
Department of Tallinn University of Educational Sciences in collaboration
with Russian scholars from Tartu University, seem to be very significant
events of the coming year.
