EDITOR's NOTE. The author of the note below (which I offer in rough
translation) is Nabokov's major English-Russian translator, Sergei Ilyin.
Sasha Kononov (to whom he refers) is an executive in the St. Petersburg
Publishing House SYMPOSIUM that has put out the excellent, annotated,
collected works of VN. Carl Proffer, whose KEYS TO LOLITA (Indiana UP) was
one of the first books on VN, was, with Ellendea Profffer, the founder of
Ardis Publishers in Ann Arbor, MI, to which VN gave the rights to republish
his Russian works in the 70s thus making them widely available for the first
time. ARDIS soon expanded into the largest Russian publisher outside of the
USSR and issued the work of many of the best "tamizdat" Russian writers. The
Russian version of KEYS clarifies a number of "in-jokes" that Proffer
included in his book. It also contains my short essay on Proffer. The
volume may be ordered direct;y from SYMPOSIUM in Saint Petersburg.
The below-mentioned "Kishinev" translation of ADA is a dreadful collective
hash that should be avoided -- although the "reworked" edition may be an
improvement.

I have in my hand the new Russian translation of Carl Proffer's KEYS TO
LOLITA, published by Symposium's Sasha Kononov who is also instrumental in
the publication of the excellent Symposium "Collected Nabokov" edition. The
new volume is a memorial dedicated to ARDIS, our longtime nurturer. It is a
very handsome book. Booksellers report it is selling like hotcakes in this
strange country where I live.
Further, Sasha's edition of ADA [a volume in the Symposium "Collected
Nabokov"] has sold out and will go into a second printing. Who would of
thought it? By the way, the old Kishinev edition, corrected and reworked has
also come out in a second printing.
Nabokov lives and flourishes. It is a pleasure to think I have played
some small part.
