Robert Dirig, Asst. Curator of the Bailey Hortorium Herbarium at
Cornell sends NABOKV-L a story from the Albany Union Times (Apr. 18, 1999,
G-1) by Michael Lopez, entitled "The Karner Blue Muse." The handsonely
illustrated piece, based largely on information supplied by Dirig and Don
Ritter whose Pine Bush Historic Preservation Project has succeeded in
saving at least a portion of the pine barrens near Albany, the unique
habitat of the butterfly named "Lycaeides melissa samuelis Nabokov."
Nabokov mentioned his find in several places in his fiction and
would have been most pleased to know that his fame as a writer would play
a role in publicising and saving this rare habitat.
