EDITOR'S NOTE. Russians in general & Nabokov in particular revere
Pushkin. Nabokov's biggest single work was his translation cum commentary
of Pushkin's EUGENE ONEGIN. Russia marks its esteem for its two greatest
writers by holding a joint Pushkin/Nabokov conference which is described
below.
Note of caution: 1) my translation below is what we in the trade
call "quick & dirty," 2) not all of the papers listed in the program were
given. None the less, it should provide non-Russian readers with some
idea of the event as well as persuade them of the formidable hazards of
"interpreting" VN without knowing Pushin's work. The conference papers
shall be published late this year under the editorship of Vadim Stark,
head of the Nabokov Foundation. -----------------
