Being neither a linguist or an optimist, I doubt that the sound of
the second syllable in Nabokov's name can be conveyed except through
intuitive leaps. After studying Russian for two years I finally got
the sound right while listening to Steve Parker give a talk at
Cornell, circa 1983. Suddenly I could hear it and reproduce it. I
don't know whether other people have to sit under the bo tree and
wait for enlightenment this way, but that's all I have to offer.
