Many people may not be aware that there are other kinds of evolution other
than Darwinian evolution. In fact, Nabokov made some pretty interesting
arguments in favor of what is now called "neutral evolution." A lot of the
work in this area is currently being done by "complexity scientists" at the
Santa Fe Institute. My paper, "Non-utilitarianism in Theories of Evolution
and Aesthetics: Insect Mimicry and Vladimir Nabokov" will be available
online through the Santa Fe Institute http://www.santafe.edu April 1. I
will also deliver a paper on the same topic at the American Literature
Association meeting in Cambridge, MA, May 24-27, 2001.
