Goodness, Nabokov has readers and supporters from all over the political spectrum. Not particularly surprising, as his political philosophy does seem to resolve itself to that idea quoted a few postings back about 'freedom' - a nebulous concept which resides at the basis of almost all political ideas. There is nothing much else except a general strain of opposition to 'tyranny' (another, equally nebulous idea: one man's tyranny is another man's happily planned economy). It doesn't appear to be a subject with which he engages in the normal left-to-right swing of things.
I am not particularly worried about what, or whether, Dubya reads. I doubt he will be discussing even the page-and-a-half synopsis of Dostoevsky with anyone. The mailing list shouldn't really (oh, proscriptive tyranny!) be a talk-shop in which Bushophiles attack Bushophobes and vice versa. Johnson-bashing can be done, privately and discreetly, in the comfort of your own home.
Regards,
James.
