EDITOR's NOTE.
In the interests of soft-core scholarship, I rented the 1950 John Huston
film "The Asphalt Jungle" last night. The scene in question is indeed
charming and quite Nabokovian--although I doubt LO has any direct
reflection of it. "Doc", on the run, lingers too long while lasciviously
leering at a high-school girl dancing to a jukebox for which he
supplies the nickels . "Doc" is almost certainly a pedophile in addition
to his other talents.
Alfred Appel's _Nabokov's Dark Cinema_ mentions the Huston gang-heist
film but sees it only as an influence on Kubrick's 1956 "The Killing"
which also starred Sterling Hayden. Nabokov (and Lubrick's LOLITA) did
draw on Huston's "Key Largo" especially in the bath tub scenes. "Key
Largo is also alluded to in _Transparent Things_.
