EDNOTE. A FEW DAYS AGO Jansy Berndt de Souza Mello took e-mail exception to what she thought an unduly personal reference to Carolyn Kunin in a posting from Dmitri Nabokov. The latter responded with a poem. Jansy responds in a verse of her own. I propose an amnesty on the occasion of VN's birthday.

There is an Enforcer named Jansy
who can't comprehend fun or fancy.
She won't fail to protest
the most innocent jest
