There are several plausible leads to explain the choice
of Osberg :

1- An allusion to the famous argentinian author, whom he was
frequently compared in the 60’s.(See B.Boyd VNAY)
2- As everybody knows, Borges don’t likes very much the Spanish.
Furthermore, in Lolita or Carmen, the Mérimée’s short story, the heroine
takes up all the tale, the fact is rare in Borges’s short stories :
perhaps VN is macking fun of him in Ada ?
3- Osberg could be a phonetic allusion to Lichberg. And so what ?
This is an assertion, not a demonstration, indeed, but I see no reason
to discard this possibility. In the same way, Laurent Dispot in la revue
La Règle du jeu (a propos the Lichberg Lolita), sees in Alicante, the town
of the Costa Blanca, an allusion to Kant...

Pour le reste, comparer la nouvelle de 1916 avec le roman de 1954, revient
effectivement à comparer un bungalow avec une cathédrale gothique.
Et après tout, on peut se réjouir du génie de Shakespeare dans Macbeth
tout en ignorant les chroniques d’Holinshed...
