Two minor points for this chapter in starting (more later).
The discussion (whatever our group conclusion) on the
"nativeness" and/or British versus American nature of
"Hullo," probably isn't enough to paint Professor N
as a native of either country. On the other hand,
2.17 has the driver getting Hugh's luggage from the
"boot", which is more clearly British. If we comb
our author's works we shal find that he write a mixed
English, or should I say an International dialect in
which he some times follows American usage etc., and
other times British. Indeed, he sometime wings it
and has constructions that are neither.
With reference to "TIME" we find in 2.15 "valet came
tripping" with past tense, and in 2.17 "Person pays
alert driver" with non-past. I don't comment.
