Dear Nabokovians,

There good news for those of you whohave followed the successes and
the
tribulations of the
VladimirNabokov Memorial Museum in St.Petersburg.
As some of you may remember theSPb Government
officially recognized the cultural value of the NabokovMuseum and
promised to grant to it a status and a funding enjoyed by
all other memorial museums of the city.
Still,some confusion regardingthe
museum's future profile remained.
At my suggestion Vice-GovernorTarasov letter clarified
the issue in another letter.
The letter
confirms that the
museum will keep its name, its location and itscollection.
As I learned from Dmitri Nabokov the letter
reached himon April 23! Let's hope it's a good sign.
Again, many, many thanks tothose who helped and continue to help us.
Also, let me apologize for manydelays in replying to your e-mails. I
hope
to handle this purely physicalproblem shortly.
As usual, we arranged new exhibits in April. One iscalled "Nabokov's
Addresses" and is a collection of photographsof many of the places
where VN and his family lived since 1919. Most ofthe
photographs were specially made for the exhibit though we relied on
the wonderful collection made by Zembla contributors for information.
Special thanks to Prof.Akiko Nakata for letting us use her
photographs
of Ithaca homes.
The other exhibit is
"Nabokov inSamizdat" and it presents an impressive collection of
hand-made books(some typed and some actually written in hand) that
Nabokov's many Russianfans secretly produced for their own and their
closest
friends' use duringthe Soviet years.

We hope to see all of you in the museum someday!

With best wishes,

Tatyana O.Ponomareva

P.S. On a less serious note: while working on the collection
catalogour
curator Elena examined one of its items,
the 1904 yearly book of"Uchilische Pravovedeniya" - a privileged
school for boys withan emphasis on legal studies where two of VN's
uncles studied and wherehis father later taught. She found that
among the "vospitateli"(off-class tutors)
there was a certain Petr Petrovich Humbert.
