Jansy Mello: This widely publicized special edition of "Lolita" by the “Folio Society” is described as "the first ever illustrated version of Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita." There’s not only the redundant emphasis on “first ever” but the implication that the illustrations are a somewhat true version of VN’s novel, now interpreted with images. In my opinion the artist, Federico Infante, didn’t get into the spirit of the novel: Humbert Humbert is grossly lecherous, Lolita wears denim shorts (I’m not sure that these were worn in the fifties), the over-all coloring is faded and drab. The images, for me, interfere with the imaginative constructions VN’s words have the power to engender and his subtle revelations of new ways of looking at things...I wonder what the other Nablers think about this publication.
