DN NOTE RE "ED NOTE":

"ULTIMA THULE" WAS THE TITLE OF ONE CHAPTER, TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH BY ME AND PUBLISHED AS A SHORT STORY, OF THE UNFINISHED NOVEL YOU REFER TO, DON, WHOSE WORKING TITLE WAS SOLUS REX, WHICH IS ALSO THE TITLE UNDER WHICH THE OTHER SURVIVING CHAPTER APPEARED, ALSO AS A STORY, ALSO TRANSLATED BY ME. THERE IS NO NOVEL, FINISHED OR UNFINISHED, TITLED ULTIMA THULE. MORE URGENT MATTERS HAVE PREVENTED ME FROM KNOWING ABOUT OR FOLLOWING THE QUIZ, BUT PERHAPS THIS INFORMATION SHOULD BE FORWARDED.

EDNOTE. "Ultima Thule" was the title of an unfinished novel VN was working on before coming to the U.S. It echoes in Pale Fire.

Thule Quiz (from the TLS)

"Or, where the Northern Ocean in vast whirls Boils round the naked melancholy isles Of farthest Thule, and the Atlantic surge Pours in among the stormy Hebrides, Who can recount what transmigrations there Are annual made?"

I came upon the answer to the source of this quotation in the opening pages of Jane Eyre (serendipitously). Jane retreats into the library to read from Bewick's History of British Birds, and quotes this passage from its introductory pages.
