Thule Quiz (from the TLS)
"Or, where the Northern Ocean in vast whirls
Boils round the naked melancholy isles
Of farthest Thule, and the Atlantic surge
Pours in among the stormy Hebrides,
Who can recount what transmigrations there
Are annual made?"
I came upon the answer to the source of this quotation in the opening pages
of Jane Eyre (serendipitously). Jane retreats into the library to read from
Bewick's History of British Birds, and quotes this passage from its
introductory pages.
