Jansy Mello has dug up additional information on Perez-Reverte from a
discussion on NABOKV-L on March 23, 2003.
Nick Mulherin explained that The Flanders Panel includes two epigraphs
from The Defense, for chapter 8 and chapter 13, respectively: "The chess
pieces were merciless. They held and absorbed him. There was horror in
this, but in this also was the sole harmony. Because what else exists
in the world besides chess?" and "In the fiery gap he had seen
something unbearably awesome, the full horror of the abysmal depths of
chess." Darryl Schade noted that "Nabokov is also mentioned in
Perez-Reverte's Nautical Chart," and editor D. Barton Johnson added that
the penultimate chapter of another novel, The Seville Communion, "has an
epigraph from Nabokov's _Pnin_: 'There are people---amongst whom I
would include myself---who detest happy endings.'"
Thanks, Jansy!
