N and McCarthyism - I am reminded of Boyd' fascinating snippet - his
observation that N abokov believed that Roman Jakobson was a Communist
spy
and that "at a time when university faculties were hostile to the search
for
communists on their campuses, Nabokov befriended the FBI agent assigned
to
Cornell, and declared he would be proud to have his son join the FBI in
that role.' (American Years 311) I suspect that there is a book
waiting
to be written here.
