Contest and query: VN, Invitation to a Beheading,
and habeas corpus

Right now we're trying to come up with works of fiction that illustrate
what's at stake in the debate over habeas corpus; ie, what are societies
like when the authorities can (or must) imprison citizens without

I'm offering a copy of The Body and the State: Habeas Corpus and
American Jurisprudence (SUNY Press, 2006) to the reader who comes up
with the best novel and EXPLANATION for its choice. Because some
readers have suggested books like Darkness at Noon and 1984, I wondered
if Invitation to a Beheading might also fit the bill.
