Phyllis Roth's voice from the past (hello Phyllis!) has prompted me to
mention my own early commentary on the these issues (monism, the double,
etc.): both in Ch V, "Singularity and the Double's Pale Ghost: From
*Despair* to *Pale Fire,* of *Nabokov and the Novel* (Harvard UP, 1980)
and in an article, "Locating the Monster in Nabokov's 'Scenes from the
Life of a Double Monster,'" in *Studies in American Fiction* 1, 9
(Spring 1981): 97-101.
