Dear Michael,
Great catch. When writing that bit I did indeed hesitate on the name
because I sensed a memory of another literary dog. Had to plunge ahead
though. Instead of being on their shelves, most of my books are around my
knees on the floor due to the institution of a new shelving scheme that will
eliminate book searching problems forever, for a month or so. At the moment
I can find nothing.
British novelist Martin Amis is famous for including in his books homages to
various authors. His favorite is Nabokov, and in his autobiography
Experience he includes a part-parody, part-homage to Woolf with a scene
almost exactly the same as the Flush! Flush! Flush! chapter in Woolf¹s book.
Amis also uses the slightly mysterious ³you² and ³your² devise employed by
VN in Speak Memory.
