Dear Matt,
I think most of Russian speakers will not think much about it
because "evich" is quite standard ending of family names in
slavic countries (cf. Miloshevich, Evnevich, Borevich), with some flavor
of the western part of the slavic world; so, the root is naturally
supposed to be the part to the left. Your question invites
to more analytical approach, and it comes to my mind that
the names like Lukash, Milosh themselves are derived from
the root "Luk", "Mil", so, the story of Lukashevich may be
more complex: Luk[e]--> Lukash --> Lukashevich. Maybe
"Luxon" was intended by VN as an example of one of many
errors (or doubtful assertions) by Kinbote. Or do you think
it is indeed related to Luke?

Another remark concerns a possible link between Aino Ackte
(finnish singer) and Iris Acht in PF. I pointed to this link recently
after my visit to Finland. The link via music (e.g., by Sibelius)as it was
discussed in the List afterwards is all very good, but could it be some
biographic similarity as well, I mean, between what is said by
Kinbote in his comments, and the real biography of Aino Ackte
(by the way, initially her name was written "Achte")?
