[EDNOTE. For some reason this birthday message--which brings wonderful news about the future of the Vladimir Nabokov Museum--was delayed in the mail. What Nabokov might like most for his birthday, in fact, is a donation to the Museum. I will check to see whether the procedure for making a donation has changed and send another announcement shortly.

Meanwhile, please join me in celebrating with Tatiana Ponomoreva and thanking her for her tireless efforts to establish the Museum on a firm foundation! - SES]

Tatiana Ponomoreva writes:

Dear friends,

The Vladimir Nabokov Museum, St.Petersburg has a special birthday announcement to make.
We are now part of the St.Petersburg State University.
The official name of the museum is now the St.Petersburg University Vladimir Nabokov Museum.

This was publicly announced yesterday at the VN birthday celebration.
St.Petersburg State University is the second largest in Russia founded in 1724. It is the
university that VN's father went to. It is a permanent structure so the museum is now on
terra firma . The museum collection is safe, the building is safe and the museum staff (4
people) is in its place.

Unlike the US, Russia doesn't have much history of university museums so the concept is
relatively novel. That is why the organizational stage took so long and there are still
many issues to be attended to.
It is possible that the rest of the building will eventually be the headquarters of the
newly founded national organization whose aim is to promote Russian language and Russian
culture in the world but that is still to be decided by the city authorities.

These 6 years have seen trials (literally) and errors but also many successes.
Anyway, I finally brought the ship into a safe harbor through many storms.
I'd like to express my immense gratitude to all those who helped the museum in many ways
during all these years.

With the very best wishes,

Tatiana O. Ponomareva
