I ‘m guessing maybe “incurably deranged in his mind” is what the
poor parents were told, layman’s language from the authorities that
be.
As far as the redundancy, it gets the hopelessness across. When Paul
McCartney says, “We’re all alone and there’s nobody else,”
he’ s not syntactically stammering. He’s just expressing the
frustration of a failed booty call.
Same with the girl in the Hemingway story, frustrated for a different
reason: “Would you please please please please please please please
stop talking.”
