Sergey Ilyin, renowned Russian literary translator, famous for having made
most of Vladimir Nabokov's English-language works available in Russian,
died last night in Moscow. A physicist by training, Serezha Ilyin was a
talented translator and a person of great integrity. I was fortunate to
have been his friend and colleague for many years. Serezha Ilyin radiated
intelligence and good humor, and seeing him was always a joyous occasion. The
passing of Sergey Ilyin is a great loss. Without him Moscow feels even more
empty and desolate.
