Dear colleagues, on April 10 at noon US Eastern time, we invite you to the next Nabokov online seminar (in Russian). Topic of the seminar: Nabokov in China. Main speakers : Kirill Batygin, Orientalist, translator, head of the MandarinPro Translation Community, resident of the Peredelkino House of Creativity, winner of the Yasnaya Polyana Prize (2024), author of the Music of Translation TV channel (https://t.me/musing_on_translation ) Vitaly Andreev, Orientalist, translator of fiction, editor, winner of the E. L. Linetskaya Novice Translator Competition (2022). At the seminar, we will talk about how Vladimir Nabokov's prose sounds in Chinese and in reverse translation from Chinese. Which Nabokov do native Chinese speakers read? Together with translators Kirill Batygin and Vitaly Andreev, we will try to answer this question in the format of a reverse translation from Chinese into Russian and English, based on excerpts from the novels "The Defense", "Invitation to a Beheading"The Gift", "Glory" and "Lolita". The key topics of the seminar are how Russian literature sounds in Chinese and what features of Nabokov's subject matter and style may be difficult to translate into Chinese.
